WHY DID JESUS WEEP
THE TRUE BELIEF OF MANY
Scripture: John 11:35 (John 11:3-4 read first) Jesus beyond Jordan (John 10:40, 16-18 miles away, almost a full days journey)
Main theme: Possible things which brought Jesus to weep.
- Reasons why Jesus wept v. 35
- Because of the pain caused to Mary and Martha because he had allowed Lazarus to die (BUT THE PURPOSE DEMANDED IT HAPPEN!!!)
- Because he was about to call Lazarus from Paradise
- Because Lazarus would die again (as a Christian he would die again, yet the hurt of death would come again). YOU DON’T GET OVER DEATH, YOU GET THROUGH IT/ Daddy, Chris, Momma, Linda, Debbie
- Because of the unbelief of all who were at the gravesite, including the sisters of Lazarus, Martha and Mary
- Verses to teach us a great lesson, one we need to grasp and do
- John 11:22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it
- John 11:23-27 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
- Jesus did not say, Do you believe I am the Christ, the Son of God?” He said, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
- John 11:35 Jesus
- John 11:36-37 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
- “LORD, by this time he stinketh” v. 39
- “for he hath been dead four days”
- He’s graveyard dead. He’s gone (Genesis 35:18)
- There’s no way he can come from death after 4 days
- John Calvin: “This is an indication of distrust.”
- The words of Jesus
- John 11:40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
- John 11:41-42 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard me. And I knew that Thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that Thou hast sent
- John 11:43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
- Do you believe in Jesus only, OR do you believe in His words?
- Lazarus believed, and he obeyed his voice
- Do you believe in Jesus?
- As the Son of God only
- Or do you believe in His words
- To the point that you will follow even when it makes no sense, or no matter the costs?
